Fashionable Clothing for Wheelchair Users

Hannah Dunk, daughter of one of our BMSTC members, was inspired by her Mum to set up her own business making fashionable clothing for wheelchair users.

“My mother Helen has always been a very glamorous lady. Being diagnosed with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis 14 years ago my mum is now wheelchair bound. I have found it almost impossible to find her fashionable clothing to fit comfortably. Being hoisted means that material rides up exposing her midriff. I came up with clothing designs to help her protect her dignity and of course to show the world she is still young and fashionable. I am thrilled to share the designs with you all!

Relapses prevented in MS Mouse Model

Researchers at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, recently showed that peripheral blood cells loaded with a drug that resembles the myelin protein are able to inhibit harmful immune responses and prevent relapses in a mouse model of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS).
The findings were described in the study “Autoantigen-specific immunosuppression with tolerogenic peripheral blood cells prevents relapses in a mouse model of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis,” and published in the Journal of Translational Medicine.  Read on.

MS Awareness Week may be over for this year, but there’s still time for you, your members, friends, family, colleagues and everyone in between to complete our survey ‘How MS Aware are you?’.

We’ve had a great number of responses so far so thank you to everyone who has completed and shared.  But we can always use more – the survey closes this Friday so please keep sharing until then!

Carers Oxfordshire Monthly Update – May 2016

Spring has arrived at last and I am delighted to be able to update you on the latest news from Carers Oxfordshire. The new edition of ‘Care Matters’ is attached both in pdf form and as an electronic link http://ow.ly/4nbLQI and as always it is full of information, advice and support for carers. Inside this edition is a pull out section highlighting some of the many free events and activities available to carers throughout National Carers Week which this year occurs 6th-12th June.  The list was accurate and up to date at the time of going to press but we are adding more each day so be sure to check out our website for those added more recently www.carersoxfordshire.org.uk.

The highlight of the week is the ‘Big Event’ on Thursday 9th June which is being opened by The High Sheriff of Oxfordshire’, Sarah Taylor.  I have attached a poster with more details of the event and if you would like to have a free stand at the venue do please contact me to book a place.

If you would like to help us support carers during Carers Week by holding an event or awareness raising day please do not hesitate to contact me or my colleague Traceydesmond@carersoxfordshire.org.uk  to discuss further.

Finally, one last appeal to you to help in Carers Week with our fundraising campaign. All money raised will be used to directly help carers, many of who struggle to have a life of their own due to their caring responsibilities. Could you hold a fundraising event at you place of work or in your team during Carers Week? Could you wear yellow to ‘shine a light’ on carers and donate £2? Or maybe not wear yellow (it is not my favourite colour for sure!) and donate £5 or more?! I have attached a poster you could display in your workplace and which you can adapt to suit your circumstances or you could just help by sending a small personal donation. It is easy to donate, either by sending a text message to 70070, quoting OXON66 and the amount you would like to donate, or by sending a cheque made out to Action for Carers (Oxfordshire) to the address below.

It is a sobering thought that 45% of carers give up work due to their caring role, and half of all carers are likely to suffer ill health than non carers.

Thank you so much for your help which is invaluable to us as we seek to create and develop new services to support carers who provide so many hours of dedicated care to their loved ones every day.
